Mom Rests

I can't resist, I have to post more photos. Gary was unloading more sheep poop out back when I put Tess out into the pasture for her 40 minute allowance. He asked if I'd seen the fox. Turns out he'd spotted her sleeping on the far bank of the creek, in our woodlot. It's a spot where she can see the entrance to the den where the kits are, but she's not easy to spot. Besides it was sunny there. I ran for the camera of course once I found her. She knew I was there, but put up with me even as I snapped about 25 photos to get this little series. At least none are blurred this time. Click on the photo for a larger view with commentary, then follow through the series by clicking each in sequence in the little panel on the right side.

Neat shots. Amazing how quickly they figure out who they can trust and who they need to hide from.

I don't know whether it's trusting me or just a bit too much self-confidence. A fox that chases dogs is maybe just a bit too uppity, I'm afraid. I worry that she'll be this relaxed with someone who just wants to shoot her.

So, how long until your local foxes greet you like this? (makes noise)

Umm, I think I'd be sorely tempted to call animal control on a fox that acted like that. I gather she's been spoiled and "tamed" by people for a long time, but that looks just plain scary.

Our vixen spent the afternoon parked in a fallen brush pile. If there were more foliage, she'd have been very hard to spot, but now that I'm learning where to look, I could find her quite easily. She just stares back at me and doesn't seem to even consider moving.

You've become quite taken with this little vixen critter!

As long as she's not bothering the boys or such I can
see her being a good guest in the area.

The boys couldn't care less. To them she's probably about as significant as a squirrel. ;p I'm more worried about all the loose dogs in the area and the risk to the little foxen.

What an amazing series of fox photos. I'll bet the kits are adorable.

I hope we will see the kits again. I don't know where she has them stashed right now.
