Got back from Ohio safely and with no serious traffic issues, yay. Seeing [livejournal.com profile] loriana, [livejournal.com profile] aerofox and [livejournal.com profile] quickcasey was just plain fun. It was nice and made me feel good. Thanks guys. Seriously.

Loom is sleyed, need to tie on and get the tools together before going to bed. Gary took care of the critters all alone and even had a yummy supper ready when I got home. He's a sweetheart.

Pictures of the hickory tree that fell down in Friday's wind and rain tomorrow maybe. It was almost dead, but I didn't expect it to fall, and especially not in that direction. By sheer luck, it broke in half and didn't land on the arena roof right over Tess' stall. Just a couple of small dents in the metal building, probably no new leaks, and Tess wasn't in her stall at the time. Ironically, Gary was in Woodstock dropping off the chainsaw for sharpening when it happened. ;p

Hickory is good firewood. Hopefully we'll get some of it into a form we can use next winter.

I noticed the barbecue section of the local monster garden centre was selling various types of wood chips in small bags. Hickory was one of the woods available. I did wonder...

Yep. Hickory has natural oils in the wood that make it burn longer and slowly but it's usually harder to get started unless it has been dried for a couple of years. It does produce a smoke that is good for smoking and barbecuing meats. It's also a good heat generator for fireplace or woodstove.

So, when are we going to see some of the fruits of the loom? :)

Might be a good time to take that old hickory down
before it falls apart into random, unpredictable
direction. Especially because because it is next
to Tess's stall.

And it will keep you warm for the winter.
Warm horsie is a happy horsie! :)

Oh the tree is definitely down now. The whole thing is on the ground and made a gouge about 10 cm. deep where it landed. We just have to cut it up and get it out of the way. It still had green leaves last year, but only at the very top part.

Yep, that ought to teach that tree a lesson about attacking stables ;)

Gary did all the chores AND made dinner?

I hope he got a treat at least.

It was fun. All the excitement of a very small fur-meet.

It will make good nice smelling firewood :) Plus you can use the ashes to fertilise a new tree ^.^

Yes, hickory makes really good firewood. Burns a long time without a lot of ashes. For a good smell, I prefer cherry or apple, or even pine, though that makes a mess of the chimney and we don't have it around here anyway. (There was lots in Michigan where I grew up though, so probably the reason I like it is mostly nostalgia. It does burn bright and start up quickly, but it makes a lot of smoke and creosote and doesn't last long.)

Creosote *bleh* I remember they had stomach pills in Japan made of that stuff, you'd taste them for a week.
