altivo: Plush horsey (plushie)
[personal profile] altivo
Got some cash for my birthday and Christmas, mainly from my mate's Mom. Usually I buy books or music with it, but this year I warned her I was going to buy plush toys. She knows we have a huge number of them in the house already, since she visits for a weekend now and then. She just smiled and said "OK".

Today we had a chance to go shopping and stopped at Toys R Us. I wanted a really big cuddly horsey. They had them, even some with wings. That would have been my first choice, hooves down, except they were only pink or lavender. So I settled for this big paint with a circus saddle. He's really huggy. I also got a couple of small sized ones to give away, and just couldn't leave behind the dark bay in the middle foreground. The others, including the small paint pegasus sitting on the saddle and the Clydesdale on the right, have been around for a while, but none were large enough to really cuddle.

A Pile of Ponies A Pile of Ponies

Christmas 2005: I decided to enlarge my herd of ponies. New members include the largest in the background, the small paint facing the camera, and the bay who is nuzzling the paint here.

My mate won't let me bring horses into the house, so...

We have lots and lots of bears and other animals, like seals, puppies, and cats. Horses have always been hard to find. I want a donkey, but haven't found a one yet.

I'm not sure our flooring is suitable for a full sized horse, alas. Mate has a point there. Letting a horse fall through the floor would not be a good idea.

She is about 400lbs. The floor is quite stable under her

Ours are in the 1100-1200 lb. range. Even my piano wasn't that heavy. :)

Ive got a filly who is going to be in that range who tries to come in. I dont think I could support the floor that much

Ignore the blinding baldness.. This was taken on a day I was late going to feed and she came in and woke me from my nap on the couch to remind me: http://www.horseherd.org/housepony.jpg

Note to self: when buying my next home make sure to ask the Realtor if the floors will support the weight of a horse... Im sure they will know.

You may have to tell them that you have a concert grand piano that walks around and occasionally likes to roll on the carpet to scratch its back. :p

The main reason the horses can't come in the house is, they won't stay on the ground floor, of course, so then they'll go upstairs (quite the operation in itself) and, no matter how careful and considerate they are, you'll hear KLOMP KLOMP KLOMP all afternoon. I don't want to even contemplate how they'd come down the stairs so they can go back out to the barn. It's really better for all concerned if they stay outside. You're quite lucky that they let you come visit them in their "home."

Ranch style here, all one level, no stairs up or down. There are stairs in the barn, though, really steep ones leading to the former hayloft. One of ours got into the tackroom once and tried to go up those. I wasn't here, but Gary had quite a time getting him to back down and leave the tiny space.

Yeah. At last. I've been wanting a pony big enough to snuggle with when my mate is away, and it's taken almost two years to find one that was affordable.

Hefty too. I think he weighs more than 10 pounds. I came to the register with my prizes and the cashier said "I can tell you like stuffed toys." I said "Oh, I just have a few ponies here." She was very concerned that the big one wouldn't fit into a bag and laughed when I pointed out that I didn't want to suffocate him anyway.

Moose was telling me about those huge ones they have at Toys R Us last night. ...from the little pictures they looked only half decent... (there are lots of cheaply manufactured low quality plush toys out there, unfortunately) ...but it actually looks pretty nice in your picture. ...I could see myself getting one like him. My bed's pretty small though. ;p

I have a big clydesdale at the head of my bed, one with a metal armature inside so it stays standing (not very much fun to cuddle. :-/)
Okay, with each sentence I write here I'm wanting one of those big ones like yours more and more...

Well, you need to go to Toys R Us and see them in person. They seem to be well-made (in China or somewhere like that, I'm sure) from decent materials, but there is some variation in quality so examine your prize carefully before choosing it. All have saddles and bridles that are sewn in place and may not be removable. I suspect there is no plush under the saddle. They are firmly stuffed and will make nice body pillows for cuddling (or other nefarious activities if you're so inclined, I don't think I am.)

Besides the paint I got, they had a pink one the same size (must be the girls' version) and the pegasus models I mentioned before, in either lavender or pink. The pegasi were adorable but the colors were too much for me. Size wise they are a good three feet from nose to rump, tail not counted. Mine weighs nearly 10 pounds at a guess and has no hard wires or forms inside that I can detect, though one of them that I inspected at the store did seem to have a plastic support tube in the neck. The store in Crystal Lake, IL had lots of them in stock, bins full. I don't know if they expected to sell more than they did or if they are always stocked that way. If it's an overstock, they may well go on sale for even less in the next few weeks. Watch for advertisements. All of the big horseys were $59.95 each. They also had some lovely life sized dogs that were very cuddly, but no wolf, coyote, or donkey that I saw, which was a disappointment.

Interesting. I've got a 5-foot tall Dot Warner plushie that's likely too big, and a 3-foot tall Wakko who would probably fit just fine in the saddle.

Yep, a three foot tall child would be right at home in the saddle. I think these are designed to be used as floor pillows to sit on while watching television or whatever.

Awwww....

Probably the same family as mine. That's where he came from. Mine is the paint. There's also a pink one the same size (the "girls" version) and a pegasus version with wings that comes in pink or lavender. Price was 59.95 this week, but they have so many of them that I'll bet they go on sale if you keep your eyes open.

Tsk. Thank goodness my mom did not think that way. She was the one who encouraged my love of plushes when I was small. When I was a 40 year old adult and started designing teddy bears and bunnies and selling them at street fairs, she was enchanted. ;)

Now I'm old enough to do as I please and no one can criticize me. Even the cashier at Toys R Us, who obviously recognized right away that I was buying for myself and not for my kids or neice or any such thing.

My mom always thought I was a little odd for having plushie horses everywhere and having horse this and horse that... but after I told her I was a zoo, she was like "oooooooooooh I get it".
