*Folds up the Wednesday shield that [livejournal.com profile] vimsig gave him, since it's almost bed time*

Wednesdays are interminable, I swear. Someone figured out how to sneak an extra 12 hours into them.

Had lunch with Gary in Woodstock, which was nice, and then went over to the Woodstock Public Library for a catalogers' meeting, which is always at least interesting but tends to run long, which this one did. Back to Harvard for the evening shift, where staff were being harrassed by some middle school age boys who were just being obnoxious for the sake of doing so, testing to see what they could get away with.

The copper pipes have been replaced so the air conditioning works again, for the moment. I wonder if they'll stay in place long enough for us to get a fence and security camera set up back there. A gray and gloomy morning at least turned into a sunny and clear afternoon and a pretty sunset.

Coding on the MUSH continues albeit slowly. Character requests can be queued to trnsmnt (at) ix.netcom.com if you don't want to wait for the web application form to come up. They'll be saved up until we're ready to "go live." Minimum information to provide for each character request is a login name, a species, and a gender. Your e-mail address is assumed valid on the mail sent. Please limit yourself to two requests maximum for now.

Here's a species list. Other species than those shown here may be delayed for later consideration.

Herbivores: mustang, deer (could also be elk), hare, squirrel, goose, woodchuck, dove, mountain sheep

Omnivores: bear, raccoon, skunk, fox, coyote, badger, raven

Carnivores: ocelot, bobcat, wolf, otter, weasel, hawk, owl, heron

Try another new MUSH, Aldria MUSH, cnc.mushhosting.net port 9009 ... its also very much under construction, there isn't even really a theme decided yet, but they are open to dragons and mythical creatures.

I'm not being prejudiced against dragons and unicorns, really. But I have a specific goal in mind with this project that calls for only naturally occurring species in their natural bodies.

There are places where you can be a dragon, of course, as [livejournal.com profile] chibiabos points out.

Koontex, a Great Blue Heron, ready to hatch. :)

Its a tough call with 2 characters ... for me, a wolf and horse might seem obvious, but a bird has more options for 'safely' RPing with any groups that happen to form early. Heavily leaning toward a wolf for my second char, but dunno. Guessing most of your friends who would join would probably go for mustang.

Got your note and you're in line. I've only created a couple of normal characters so far, in order to have something to test code against. It will probably be a few days yet.

When several of my customers had copper piping stolen on their air conditioning systems, I put PVC pipe around it in the areas within reach. It wouldn't be hard to get round, but most of the thieves tend to be kinda lazy, so there wasn't a repeat performance.

That sounds like reasonable camouflage, but ours was concealed under half an inch of black rubber insulation and they still went for it. They had to peel the rubber off in six to eight inch chunks.

How much did replacing the pipes cost? Copper seems expensive at the moment.

Copper is high, though the price has been dropping lately. If it weren't so high priced (price raised by yuppie speculators of course) then this sort of theft wouldn't pay off well enough to be a big problem.

I haven't seen the repair bill yet, but I'm sure it will run over two thousand dollars US, and quite likely over three.

I did suggest that we put a lion or a bear inside the fence when it goes up. For all that, the actual pipe that was replaced probably cost maybe $200 in material. The ripped up pieces that were stolen may have fetched $25 as scrap sold to a recycler. This is the social cost of petty crime. The thief gets a pittance, and the victim gets to pay out a hundred times more. Worse, it does nothing to change the conditions that promote the theft.

I am glad you pointed that out. I often wonder that in the clamour to punish the perpetrators, the root cause of crime often gets forgotten.

As far as I'm concerned, the real criminals in this scenario, which is apparently being played out all over the US now, are the greedy speculators who have inflated the price of metals beyond any true market reasonability.

This behavior affects us in hundreds of ways. It contributes to the excessive cost of energy, food, and manufactured goods. It causes market prices to fluctuate wildly without any cause other than a rumor whispered in some gullible idiot's ear. And, most offensive, it adds to the immense wealth of a very few extremely greedy fat rats who have done no actual productive work in their lives. They are parasites.

I had no idea other people like me existed in this day and age. I could not have put that better myself. *hugs*

I remember seeing an article on line a few weeks about how to profit from the growing cost of food. What kind of sick bastard writes an article like that, and what kind of sick society applaudes it?

Answer to your question: a selfish, unprincipled asshole writes it, and a greedy moron applauds it.

I am not a communist, though I've been called that. Communism doesn't work. I am not a true socialist either, because that doesn't work any better than communism. But I also think that unprincipled capitalism has proven to be a failure. The socialist writers and philosophers were correct when they pointed out the way in which capitalism crushes people under the heel of a few wealthy individuals, reducing most of humanity (and the rest of the world for that matter) to abject poverty and misery for the benefit of a few who already have more than they will ever need.

I identify myself as a social democrat, personally. which is a shame as there are no such parties in the UK. I have no real problem with capitalism. I just don't like to see it run out of all control. It DOES need to be regulated to curb it's excesses.

Will have to think about what I'd want to make.. not likely I'd join or look really til after my trip and i'm back home, though.

Maybe a deer. hmh. Just not sure I'd make a good deer.

Well, you can study up a bit on how to be a deer, or you can let other folks tell you how to be a deer when they think you are going wrong. ;p Or you can not worry about it. That's my recommendation. Pick whatever interests you.

A moose is really a specialized elk. For the moment, I've omitted moose because he's so large and sort of a "top herbivore" just as the cougar would be the "top carnivore" in this picture. I'm also imagining a location that spans foothills and mountains in southwestern Colorado or thereabouts, which may be a bit far south for moose.

Am I wrong? I'm negotiable, certainly. I pondered just putting down "equine" and "cervine" and letting people say in their description that they were burro or mustang or white-tail or elk. But I thought it sounded just too scientific and besides, it doesn't work well in a WHO type command that lists everyone who's logged on with their species and gender.

You are not wrong. I won't sway you from your initial vision, when I doubt I could succesfully participate. Right now I'm at the "sign in as a guest" stage. MUSHs and such are so intangible to me.

Oh, you can do it. There's nothing hard about it, it's just another kind of chat system, like IRC or AIM. Don't worry, I'll find a beginner's guide and post a link to it before long.

Ocelot is interesting. I've played one before. Bobcat too, if you don't mind having almost no tail. Eventually we'll have a cougar or too (BIG kitty) if we get enough participants.
