Flipped the switch this morning to trade the newly redesigned and streamlined library website for the old one. The original site had been hanging around for about eight years, and was done in Frontpage (ugh.) It had stuff piled page upon page until it was huge, cumbersome, slow, and, most importantly, never used by much of anyone.

I expect there will be some screams about this or that thing that isn't there any more, and I may have to add some back, but this is like shearing a sheep who hasn't been shorn for several years. The removed weight is a tremendous relief.

(Yes, I kept the old site archived where we can refer to it and rescue information if necessary.)

...I take it this is common for librarians to get excited about ;)

It's common for anyone who has to manage a website to get excited about, I suppose. Getting rid of a lot of baggage that wasn't yours in the first place and has just been weighing down your work and the hardware for several years seems like a good thing to me.

*grins* Sounds about right. For some reason, I found it amusing...or maybe I'm just in a good mood ^^

It's very clean and looks easy to use.

Thanks. Also easier to maintain (by about 10,000 percent.)

Well, it found Linda Nagata for me right fast, as a random search
so it seems to work.

I don't know what the old one was like, but the new one sure looks great to me. :)

The old one is here. No, I'm not responsible for that "FrontPage"-y look, or for the ugly html that underlies it.

That's better than I expected, actually, but yeah - the new one's still a huge improvement. :) And the old one certainly looks does have the 90s look, although I'm nostalgic enough to actually have a weak spot for that... to an extent. :)

I like it: clean, simple and XHTML + CSS is certainly for the win. The index page fails W3C validation, though.

That validator is picking nits that I don't care about. In fact, I find them rather absurd, since it is rejecting options that obviously work with the common browsers and are essential to formatting the page as you want it.

Ignoring the alt wankery, hspace and vspace can be implemented (more flexibly!) by setting a CSS margin on the image, and align can be implemented by making the image float.

Thanks for the tips. I'm not nearly as familiar with CSS as with the original HTML, and this thing is an irritant and distraction rather than a main focus of my job so I try to keep from spending a lot of time on it.

Or at least sites that require less maintenance. ;p

Hooray for good redesigns :) The only thing I ever used frontpage for was to change the html by code, not wysiwyg
