Making hay
Jun. 16th, 2008 08:37 pmHaying weather is here, and none too soon. No rain expected until Friday, today was beautiful. We've already received one call from friends asking if we can help getting in hay on Thursday. Hopefully our own hay supplier will have a load (or two) for us by the end of the week. The grass has grown long enough, we just had to get dry enough weather to cure it.
Today was the start of "summer reading club," an annual ritual at many public libraries that involves bribing kids to read (or to pretend they are reading.) I rather disapprove of the way it is done, and don't believe it does a lot of good, but trying to stop it is like trying to stop a locomotive by standing on the track...not recommended. The library was a bit of a zoo as a consequence.
Complaints were coming in about the library's revised web pages. You won't believe what the complaint is, though. The old one used to have a link you could click that got you an outdated list of internet search engines. You could click on the one you wanted (only about half of them were still live) and be taken to that page to enter a search. That went away with the old site, and apparently a large number of (sorry, I have to say this) drooling morons were no longer able to find Google. As reported to me, they didn't even know enough to type "google.com" into the URL entry box in the browser. No wonder America is so messed up, if the intelligence of the populace is that low. I put a link to Google back on the front page, and resisted a pop up comment on mouseover such as "Right here, you idiot" though I was severely tempted... My own opinion is that anyone who doesn't know enough to type in a simple URL should not be on the internet. They are a danger to themselves and to others, and will only end up falling for some ridiculous scam or rip off.
Today was Gary's birthday, so I took him out to dinner at a local establishment that celebrates the "Old West" in its decor and menu. We were both astonished at the price of steak on the menu, but since we rarely eat anything like that, it was OK. The price of beef is rising faster than the price of gas, for those of you who hadn't noticed...
