Getting warped again
Sep. 13th, 2008 09:49 pmGot the cashmere plied in time to take it over for the show dropoff along with the other stuff. Still have to ply the cashmere and silk skein, which is a bit more tricky, and finish up the cotton scarf. I have until the 25th for these now, so no problem.
Chained up the warp for Argos' shawl, ready to dress the loom. The cone of yarn I wanted to use had some moth nibbles, but only on the end of the spool, so it worked out, with occasional knot tying at the extreme ends of the warp where it doesn't matter. Hopefully I didn't miss any weak spots.
The warp is navy blue Shetland wool, and the weft is a silvery gray. The weave pattern will create a sort of lattice work in which the gray seems to float on top of a background of blended blue and gray. And no, I wasn't thinking about the US Civil War. I just happened to have those two colors of Shetland on hand, and it's the right weight for this project.
It has been raining continuously here since some time Friday morning. By our measurement we've had about 3 1/4 inches, which would normally create significant surface flow here but has not. That's how dry the ground has become. Areas south of us weren't so lucky, though. A band through central Illinois and the south of Chicago may have gotten more than 8 inches in places. I was thinking this morning that if that rain had been snow, we'd have at least 28 inches on the ground here and they'd have six feet of it farther south. Tess and the sheep are restless at being kept indoors, but they'll live. Seems to be easing a bit now, with a prediction of only a tenth of an inch tonight and a quarter inch tomorrow.
Tomorrow I'll start threading the loom. Only 240 ends this time, and the pattern is a fairly simple repeat. Barring too many distractions, it should be ready to weave by evening. The nuisance will be tying up the treadles. I'll have to redo eight of the ten for this pattern, which involves lying on my back under there and diddling a bunch of chains through tiny holes in the wooden levers. It will be worth it, though.

I'm glad you didn't get all soaked, I think it'd be fantastic if they had some way of catching all that run off :D I know Chicago has something like that for flood mitigation.
