Argos starts growing fur
Originally uploaded by Altivo
His muzzle is furred now, and his nose is in place. The windows through which I hope I'll be able to see are covered with a piece from a white nylon stocking, stretched tightly. Seems to work when I try it on so far. Fur on the inside of his ears is in place, so tomorrow I just have to do eyes, eyelids, and finish covering the ears and skull. So far he's coming out with a likable grin rather than looking like some ferocious werewolf, and that's good.

Straight on view here.

In other news, there was more snow today but it all evaporated without even getting the ground or pavement wet. I expect a hard freeze tonight, didn't happen last night. Then it's supposed to warm up again.

Yes, and I have to thank you again for your invaluable book and web site. Each time through I learn more. :)

Very flattering! Thanks. Though the best thanks is seeing it result in a new fursuit and fursuiter. :)

Pictures of the nearly finished head are in Flickr now:

I like the results, except I'm still tinkering with the compromise between vision and having my eyes show, especially in flash photos. That's a puzzler.

I think I saw you mention MFF. I'll watch for you and say hi if you are there.

Dear Rider.

Argos is looking good. Only thing I see, and it is probably too late, is the nose kinda drops rather than being along a straight line down the top of the muzzle (bridge of nose). Overall proportions appear they will come out good but always hard to tell at this stage until the rest of the head is filled out and furred. Good you can see ok, but that is a biggie for me (I can trip on a dime).

Imperator

I think what you are seeing is that I haven't yet sculpted the fur on his muzzle. I trimmed where the nosepad glues on so as to get it firmly attached to the fabric, and I'll have to do some more trimming. The plush is about a half inch long and quite dense.

He's looking good.

And because I wondered - what do you do with your fursuits after the meetups?

I haven't "retired" one yet. 'Tivo has been worn probably a half dozen times and lives in a plastic storage box in my bedroom. If this Argos turns out as well as I hope, he may get more wear. 'Tivo is a bit clumsy and I'm always afraid his head will slip awry. The goal this time is to get better vision and agility.

I think werewolves get a bad rap...The thought that animal-people would be not just ferocious, but mean-hearted, like humans.

After all, wolves do what they do, because that's how they live, not out of malice.

So, likable is good.

I was at the seasonal halloween shop the other night, and there was a nice wolf mask...nice in the fact that it had a furry hood that was white with brown tips, and soft. But it had a snarly face. I thought, what if it had a face that you could like, almost cute, even if it did have big teeth behind the lips. Oh right, that's why I like wookiees.

Some of the current writers are doing a much more interesting job with werewolves, actually. I need to read more of that.

I agree that real wolves aren't malicious, though they can certainly be dangerous under the wrong circumstances. Argos is a character though, and I control who he is. He's the old guy in the neighborhood that everyone trusts and cares about, a skilled artisan in his field who is nice to kids and old ladies and tends to trust everyone but is pretty naive about the world at large.

I always got the impression that werewolves were meant to symoblize "impure thoughts" in humans (where do you think the old "hairy palms" thing came from?)and people who used witchcraft (the other Satanism, if you subscribed to Old World church-based faiths) that the church used to sway more people into the congregation. Nothing like monsters to make the fearful run to God Almighty.

Oh true, the Native Americans beleived in the Skinwalkers and all, but I'm speaking more based on my own Anglo heritage...

You need to get one color scheme in that room.

As for The Head.

Hmm...

*walks around it, peering.*

This is expertly made. @.@

*snickers* The room has no decor. It's just what amounts to my weaving room now. In theory, I guess the house architect thought of it as a living room or front room, since there's a door to the outside and a tiny vestibule and closet by it. The front "deck" (which is really just a ten foot square of planks) is outside that door. But in a rural location, no one uses the front door. There are no sidewalks, and the only access from the road a hundred feet away is up our driveway, so of course people use the door that faces the drive. There's a "family room" at that door, and that's where we have sofas and chairs and the woodstove and such. It's the place we sit and socialize, not this room.

As far as "expertly made" well, thanks, but it's really very amateur I think. I'm learning, and I like the way this one is "heading" but the next will be even better. ;p

Are you having naughty thoughts, wuffy? ;p See tonight's posting for more photos. Now he has eyes and most of his fur on.

Careful. Look at the photos from last night, and remember the teeth you saw in the earliest photos...
