Winter's blast
Dec. 1st, 2008 01:46 pm...Ond þas stanhleoþu stormas cnyssað,
hrið hreosende hrusan bindeð,
wintres woma, þonne won cymeð,
nipeð nihtscua, norþan onsendeð
hreo hæglfare hæleþum on andan.
Eall is earfoðlic eorþan rice,
onwendeð wyrda gesceaft weoruld under heofonum.
"The Wanderer" (Anglo-Saxon poem)
"...And storms beat upon these rocky cliffs,
fallen frost fetters the earth,
the bearer of winter. Then dark comes,
nightshadows deepen, from the north is sent
a hard storm of hail in malice toward men.
All is troubled in this earthly realm,
the turn of events changes the world under heaven."
In a day, winter descended. No color breaks up the bleakness of a black and white landscape beneath a leaden sky. It's as if nature could read the calendar. December first! Hide the sun! Freeze the waters! Cloud the sky!
And on top of that, a Monday. Eeeww!
