Party pony
Dec. 13th, 2008 03:37 pmSeems to happen every year at this time. There always comes this day when I really have to put in an appearance at two different parties.
Now, normally I'm not a party guy. I don't like crowds, loud music, or noise at all. There's no better way to keep me away than those. These are a little different. This morning, my spinning guild had its annual pot luck meeting, in which we combine a pot luck lunch with a business meeting and a grab bag gift swap. I'm the only active male member, and the group is chatty but not overly loud and the food is always good. (As in a dozen different kinds of salad, home baked breads, and usually some soup good. I like that sort of thing.) But after four hours of that, I'm really partied out.
Nonetheless, this evening is the annual Sagittarius party, something I know I've mentioned before. We have so many friends born in December or late November that we have a joint birthday celebration, and tonight's the night. A second pot luck. This one tends to be heavy with the unusual, from homebrew to homemade cheeses to animated food (a volcanic cake that spewed out its own icing was once featured, for example.) Last year we missed this one because of a heavy snowfall. Gary really wanted to go, so we packed everything into the car and set out, but after just a mile or so he agreed to turn back once he saw another vehicle make a bad turn and slide into a guardrail ahead of us.
No snow today. There's snow on the ground from last week's storms, but the temperature is well above freezing and, in fact, it's raining. So off we go, as soon as the critters are fed and bedded down. Hopefully the temperature won't fall off too fast, so we can get home before the rain turns to ice. Wish us luck, and I'll try to stay awake. ;p

Date: 2008-12-14 04:57 am (UTC)I really like soup, many kinds. Choosing one favorite would be very difficult. Gary makes a Polish soup/stew thing called bigos that is a sort of hunter's stew with sauerkraut, red wine, caraway seeds, and various bits of meat. It also has raisins and some tomatoes I think, and it's really good on a cold winter day with nice rye or black bread.
I like pea soup or bean soup too. We make several kinds of soup from winter squash or pumpkin and those are nice too. Turkey or chicken with noodles or rice is always good as well.

Date: 2008-12-14 11:40 am (UTC)And you as well, my friend. I hope your weather has improved. We had rain yesterday and today it is unseasonably warm so the snow is all melting. But it will be cold in another day or two with more snow.
*offers oatmeal with apples in it*

Date: 2008-12-14 01:15 pm (UTC)Actually I ate too much stuff with sugar in it and woke up with a headache this morning but it's pretty much gone. It was a pleasant evening and the roads didn't freeze up as we had feared.

Date: 2008-12-15 12:02 am (UTC)Won't last though. Could snow again as soon as tomorrow, when cold air from Canada and the Dakotas reaches us.
Yeah, you're wise not to drive in snow. Even if you are experienced and careful, a lot of other people will not be. You may stay out of trouble yourself and they'll get you anyway. Only do it if absolutely necessary. Even up here where people should know better, it takes them a whole month to remember that "Oh, yeah, duh, snow makes things really slippery." ;p

Sorry I missed sending felicitations on your natality! Seven squared is a good number :) And hey, you're younger than my spouse!

Date: 2008-12-16 02:35 am (UTC)*snickers* You need to redo your math. I only wish I was "seven squared" again. Until next December now, I'm a prime number: 59.
*hugs*

Date: 2008-12-16 07:02 am (UTC)And it's not my math but my memory that's problematic. I simply remembered the wrong first digit. This does make you somewhat older than my spouse, though.
While you may lament no longer being a prime number, you are fast approaching a differently special number: 60 is the first number evenly divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6!
Why yes, I do think about that sort of thing sometimes :P

Date: 2008-12-16 12:12 pm (UTC)What seems strange to me about it is that in both cases, mechanical tools are involved. Men are fascinated by the spinning wheel just as much as they are by the loom, but for some reason, fewer are inspired to try it. This to the point that though most spinning wheels and even hand spindles are created by men, quite a high percentage of the makers don't spin themselves. You can guess the implications of that for the quality and usability of the tools. One has to be very careful when shopping for equipment.
