Shaun the Sheep
Originally uploaded by Altivo
R.I.P. Always sweet tempered, loved people, his only bad trait was the way in which he would jealously demand affection, to the point of butting you if he thought you were paying too much attention to another sheep. He left us about 16 offspring, most with nice wool but none with his disposition or knowing attitude. Declining since last summer, a week ago he went down and never got up again. We tried, but couldn't pull him out of it. Gone wherever good sheep go, he will be missed.

Photo taken in 2001 when he was a yearling.

How old do these types of sheep normally get?

That's a more difficult question to answer than you might think, mainly because most sheep are sent off to become bratwurst or lamb chops long before their natural time. However, we were told by several sheep people, including the vet, that nine is quite a ripe old age for a sheep. One friend of ours had some that lived to 15 or so, but they were quite decrepit by then and were a much larger breed.

Aw!
Did he die on his own? You mentioned earlier that you were going to give him more time.

We gave him a week, including several cortisone shots, turning him several times a day, and feeding by hand. No change. Soon he would have been developing the equivalent of bed sores, which quickly become infected. We had him put down Friday afternoon.

Mary had a little lamb.
His fleece was white as snow.
Everywhere that Mary went,
the lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school one day,
which was against the rules.
It made the children laugh and play,
to have a lamb at school.

Imperhugs

*hugs and nuzzles* We're recovering. Gary was even able to laugh about it today. I'll post how and why later this evening. He even talked about getting more sheep as these get older and disappear. Two more are close to Shaun's age and both have had problems before but recovered. One is Salt, twin to Pepper whom Bear took. The other is She-bah, Shaun's first mate.

Yes, he was spoiled rotten for a sheep, to tell the truth. Bottle lambs get that way. They're so cute!

My deepest condolences on your loss... Given that he produced 16 offspring, it sounds like he had a pretty good life. I'm also pretty sure he was spoiled with lots of love and attention from you guys. All sheep should be so lucky. He's probably grazing in some lush pasture near the Rainbow Bridge, surrounded by ewes, and just waiting for you to show up again. :)

Sleep peacefully, Shaun.

My condolences for you and Gary for your loss.

Looks like we all have lost someone dear to us lately.
And all good people. And, well, sheep.
I am sure Shaun had a great life, and maybe some of
his offspring will become as wise and friendly
as he was.

*hugs warmly and tightly*

You're right of course, but no amount of experience makes it easier. I don't get as attached to sheep as to dogs or horses, so I'm fine. It was harder for Gary, who's the type to take an injured pigeon to the vet and pay to have it cared for.
