Talk about dodging live ammunition and dashing for cover. After just one day off I came in to work to find my desk covered, the big five user public internet machine down and unbootable, complaints about printers and various other stuff not working, and the climate control in the library once more gone bonkers, with part of the building being heated well into the 86F range while another area was only in the 60s. At least I don't have to deal with the last one.

Hard drive appears to have crashed on the internet shared system, though. This is not going to be popular with users unless we get it back quickly. Vendor insisted that I run dban and try to reload everything to make sure it was the hardware that failed. Running dban took all day, it was still verifying when I left.

Printing issues were caused by some of Microsoft's patches rolled out last week. Fortunately they could be uninstalled.

At least the web site updates were pretty straightforward, and gave me something to do while waiting for dban to finish. The stuff covering my desk was mostly cataloging, which did not all get finished today, but more than half of it did.

Spinning along, hoping to break the one mile marker for the first month of our little friendly competition here. All day drizzle at least showed that the Rain-X applied to my windshield yesterday was in fact functional, though a little heavier coat might be better.

It's amazing how quiet the library becomes when the internet is down. Doesn't make me want to hurry and bring things back on line...

I had one pc out of twenty-seven that stopped printing two weeks ago. As these are DeepFreeze machines, the only incident that occurred when thawed was MS updating. It seemed to be an anomaly, and was brought to my attention some five days after the updates, so after a few unsuccessful attempts to correct the problem I pulled the machine and replaced it with a clone (that juvee issue...). hmmmm, maybe I'll do another little swap when time permits.

dban looks interesting. I have never wiped a disc prior to reinstall as I usually just ghost over the old data.

Speaking of wiped... good luck with the RainX. I didn't like the effect from it at night.

Well at this point I'm not convinced that dban does anything useful at all. I think what they were after was to erase enough of the disk so that the new installation would run from scratch rather than as an "upgrade" to the existing software. There are better ways to do that, like maybe put the question in your installation script asking which to do if an existing installation is detected.

If they needed to test the drive prior to installation, that too could have been built into the script, using something simple like format/verify on each partition. Frankly, I think this was just the usual bottom level tech support problem, people who have a script and can't think (or aren't allowed to think) for themselves at all. After three tries with dban, the symptoms remained the same. I asked them what to do, offering to order a replacement drive if they would just tell me what size, interface and speed (the software vendor provided this particular hardware, though we own the hardware now.) Instead of an answer, I was asked to try dban again. I have dismantled the unit, determined what the disk drive was, and ordered a replacement. It was only $50. I have also asked them to escalate the problem report up to the department manager level. Since that manager is already aware of my dissatisfaction with their tech support staff, I expect some kind of activity on this by tomorrow. I'm pretty sure she was out of the office today.

So far, I like the Rain-X, though I want to repeat the treatment while I can still get a warmish day to do it.

It's always sucky to come back to more work. We do it differently where I work. If we have staff absence, we do not even attempt to keep to our usual SLA. We just tell everyone they have to wait longer...tough!

Sometimes that's what happens here too. I just really hate, hate, hate dealing with clueless front line vendor support staff.
