Harbingers
Mar. 1st, 2009 06:08 pmWell, maybe. This morning I saw a red winged blackbird. Normally we see them in spring and early summer. It was only one, and I didn't hear his distinctive cry, but he was only 20 feet away so I'm absolutely sure of the identification.
On the other hoof, it's cold again, and getting colder. Supposedly tonight will be the worst, with warmer temperatures to follow. Back in the pasture, where a huge flood was still draining across part of our land from the neighbor's where he cut down most of the trees last year and let his horses trample the ground down among the stumps so it no longer will absorb anything, we have a frozen glacier. Of course, he has it worse, as serves him right. He wouldn't believe anyone's advice, and now that field is a lake, frozen hard on top but with at least six to eight inches of water all over it. He can't put horses out there and can't even get them to the field beyond it, which is wooded and still high and dry. I wonder if he'll ask for access over our land... I hope not.
Woodstove is going again, and we just brought in a load of wood to the garage. Hopefully this will be the last one needed. Time to make supper.
