Dominating a domain
Mar. 5th, 2009 09:38 pmSo I've had a registered domain for altivo.org for quite a while now. At the time I registered it, there was q real cheap deal available, and it seemed worthwhile to grab the name lest someone else take it. I mapped a couple of things to it, though they've been lightly used. Tried to get e-mail to route through it, but didn't succeed, and I left it at that.
Well, tonight I got around to checking on it again, and this time I got the e-mail working properly. Consequently, Tivo and Argos now each have their own working e-mail at altivo.org. Not that it's anything particularly useful, but it's good to have figured it out and tested it just in case I seriously want to use them. It also means I can create pointless e-mail addresses and accounts for each of my horses, dogs, cats, etc. if I choose. ;p
Spring! Well, almost. The equinox is still a couple of weeks away, but the temperature got up to 60F today and the air smells of spring. I didn't see a single junco around the feeders either. Their departure (they are also called "snowbirds") is one of the clear signs that spring has finally arrived. Chances are they haven't really gone away yet, but soon... Someone at the library said they've seen robins already.
Haven't seen our local vixen yet, but this weather should bring her out. Gary thought he had smelled her a couple of times this week, but I haven't noticed that. While there was still snow in the pasture, I'm pretty sure I saw a line of prints she left running across it, though.
Now comes the mud. Eeew.

Date: 2009-03-06 04:19 pm (UTC)The mud is incredible this morning. I swear it could swallow entire freight trains and leave no trace. Fog was bad too when I drove to work, and of course no one had their lights on.

The prior failed attempt was using my own server, which didn't work because it had a floating "no-ip" address, and a brief but nasty experiment with Yahoo mail (which ought to have been successful since Yahoo is the domain registrar in this case.)

Or my hosting company. Or any of my email that happens to go over a network run by AT&T, which I can neither detect or prevent.
And if it's an email message it probably exists at both the sender and the receiver...and the other guy may be on Google.
If it's really that serious a secret, that's why there's PGP.
Yahoo pretty well bites. I have a Yahoo mail account because I have a Yahoo ID and instant messenger handle. I don't check my Y mail. And I can neither forward it nor POP it to Google without paying.
There are some things that life's too short to worry about, and absolute 110% privacy is something I don't worry about any more. Good enough is good enough.
It's just so damn convenient.
Oh, the koolaid tingles when I snort it.
