OpenVMS has XDM. Linux has XDM. Surely they must be able to talk to one another. Surely?

XDMCP is working between my Linux boxen. I can ask for an XDMCP connection at the login screen of either one, choose the other, and log into it with full graphical environment just as if I were sitting at the other console. Kinda pointless if both machines are in the same room, but interesting nonetheless.

OpenVMS on the Alpha includes an XDM service. I have configured and activated that service, supposedly to allow XDMCP logins from remote X terminals. The Linux login screen manager can see the OpenVMS system and offers it as an option. But when selected, all you get is a blank screen with an X pointer on it. The pointer can be moved. But there is no login widget and apparently no way to get one. CTRL-ALT-BS returns you to the Linux login screen. This ought to work, and I must be missing something, but I dunno what it is. My VMS manuals are old. X itself does work between Linux and VMS. If I ssh into the VMS system, I can run Xwindows applications there and have them display on my Linux terminal. But so far, no joy at getting a full graphical login.

Rain, rain, go away. It's very soggy here.

Oh, and help the snow leopards:

The Snow Leopard Trust (http://www.snowleopard.org/) needs your help!

They would like to you to sign up for their eNews and have others sign up as well. For every new subscriber, the Kearsley Fund will donate $2 to the Snow Leopard Trust. Their goal is 3000, but they are NOWHERE CLOSE! However, if we all sign up and post this in our journals, we can help donate up to $6000 for snow leopard conservation!

Visit here for more info!

Costs you nothing, just give them a valid e-mail address and they get $2 from the grant. You can unsubscribe later if the newsletter becomes a nuisance.

I'm always up for useful spam in place of the useless spam I usually get.

I signed up for the Snow Leopard trust.

They didn't like my email with the plus in it (rustitobuck+snowleopard@gmail.com). Oh well. There are other ways to filter if need be.

What version of VMS? I think I last worked with OpenVMS 6.2, and it was quite some time earlier that I used a VAXStation/DECWindows.

This is version 8.3 running on an Alpha. I'm sure there's an answer, it will just take some digging.

No wonder you look like a waffle. That heatsink in there has done a curling iron job on you.

Horses devour waffles. But only the kind that are made from flour and eggs, not the furry ones with legs. ;p
