Day without progress
Mar. 15th, 2009 07:04 pmAt least the weather was nice. Made it up to almost 60F, with sun and little wind.
Actually I progressed on one thing, I ordered garden seeds. And a yummy dinner has been simmering in the crockpot all day.

Date: 2009-03-16 03:26 am (UTC)Still, you were close. It was corned beef for St. Patrick's Day. With carrots and potatoes, simmered in beer. I made the cabbage in the microwave at the last minute. It turned out really nice. Unhealthy as heck, but it was an indulgence and it was on sale this week for cheap. (Cheap as chicken, in fact.)

Date: 2009-03-16 07:51 am (UTC)Well Bear did the honors this year with a cornbeef (greasyoilybadchloresterol) stew using whole onions and potatos and big cabbage and carrots. Turned out great. BTW, I like mooshy veggies in stew. Crock pot of course.
Bear also did garden honors with a large purchase of small packages of seeds for all kinds of yummy veggies and today I marked out where I think a good garden layout would go with T posts. Gonna rent a roto-tiller and mix horse manure right in (Tonka's mostly it is right on the other side of the fence). Fencing the garden with chicken wire or similar to keep most varmints out. Probably corn along one side and then cabbage and lettuce, spinach and chard, carrots and potatos, peas, tomatos, onions, several kinds of peppers and so forth. He bought a lot of seed packets and next is to figure out how/when/why type stuff. In the past I have had great success with gardening in Alaska and this should be no different. YUMMY and healthy and not that much work, really.
Impers making a crockpot of beans.

Date: 2009-03-16 10:48 am (UTC)When we tried growing corn on two year old manure, it grew real nicely. Then came the raccoons who ate it all. They can tell when it's just right and get it the day before you would have picked it yourself. Good luck. XD
I'm always tempted by the funny stuff in the seed catalog, you know, the purple carrots and blue potatoes, giant pumpkins, all that sort of thing. I mostly resisted this time except for the giant kohlrabi. The most important thing for me is tomatoes. You just can't buy good ones. This year I have strawberry plants coming to try once again.
Shumway's has a carrot called Imperator, "the sweetest and longest variety of all" they say. *snicker* Carrots are so cheap at the store, though, and need such perfect soil that I don't plant them. I needed one more packet to make the $20 order so I'd get the "free bonus" and I picked the "Painted Pony" beans. I know what they are, I've had them before: Appaloosa beans. Each bean is colored like a tiny Appaloosa, dark on one half, light with speckles on the other.
