Gas prices lurching upward again for no apparent reason, as high as $2.19 where they were $1.59 three weeks ago.
Stopped at the new Walgreen's store in Harvard because they had a sign out front saying "Webkins 2/$10." Yes, I bought two. These were the small sized ones but cute and fuzzy. A very furry bear for Gary and a brown pony for me. The fun (or scary, depending on how you look at it) thing about it was that the store's floor plan is identical to the one in Woodstock that was put up three or four years ago. I mean, really identical, with everything in the same places. I still need to visit the new Tractor Supply Co. store that took over part of the space that used to be Walmart.
Hooked up the new firewall box this morning, and loaded the software. Maybe it won't be so bad getting it set up. Turns out I can run the old and new configuration software simultaneously, so I can look at the old set up while creating the new one. Since there's really no way to print our the settings in any intelligible form, this will certainly help. The only problem with doing it that way is that both units can't be on the network at the same time since they will have the same addresses... But I think I can work that out.
Warm and partly cloudy today, but looked like rain coming in at sunset. I see that the blizzard that plastered the Rockies is going to be here on Saturday. We have 80% chance of snow all day and night. I doubt much of it will stick around for long though.
Oh, and I got around to making the USB modem I bought off EBay work properly with my desktop at home. I was puzzled at first about trying to find and use the device file created by udev, but that's been worked out. The kernel refers to ttyUSB0 but in fact the file created is /dev/tts/USB0. Just one of those open source glitches I guess. With that worked out, the Chestnut Dialer made my ISP connection first try, set up the routing, and accepted the DNS server addresses provided. Oops. Earthlink's DNS servers have been flaky and messed up for weeks. I suspect they are underpowered and overloaded. I hardcoded other servers for DNS and that took care of it.
I woke up this morning wondering where my PostScript manuals were. Now this is odd, and I have no idea why I suddenly seemed to want them, but I'll bet I find out soon. While doing chores this afternoon I checked where I thought they would be out in the barn and indeed they were there. A bit dusty but otherwise in fine shape so they are back in the house and dusted off now. We shall see.
Reading the book version of Gaiman's Stardust, and unlike
hellmutt finding that I like it. Better than the film, in fact. Much wittier, though a bit more gauche and risque at times. As usual, the Hollywood version made a lot of pointless changes and missed some really good ideas that were in the book. Oh, and the illustrated edition that came out in installments before the book does have the exact same text, apparently. The illustrations by Charles Vess fill the margins and gutters and occasional full pages, like a sort of illuminated manuscript rather than what we usually think of when we hear the words "graphic novel."
