Not my favorite stuff. Back in 2006 or so, I wrote a web browser interface in ASP and SQL Server to maintain data for our public internet workstations. At the time, I was stuck with MS SQL Server and IIS, and was replacing a prior half-baked commercial product that used ASP. So I took the path of least resistance, particularly since we had paid quite a lot for the SQL Server software.

Now it has been sufficiently depreciated, and the server hardware is getting old too. The new director asked me today what major expenses we should anticipate in the next fiscal year and I said we should consider a new server and RAID setup for the network. I also said I didn't want it to be running Windows. She seemed willing enough to go along with that.

This means, most likely, that I'm proposing Debian, Apache, MySQL, and PHP or Python for the database interface. And that I need to put time into building and testing the replacement code soon. I have options for a test environment now, either on OpenVMS or Debian, but I don't know where I'll find the hours to do this.

In other news, Gary's birthday is Wednesday. The last of the gifts I had ordered came today, and as I opened the box I had a brief panic thinking I couldn't remember where I'd hidden the other pieces. Fortunately, it was just panic and I did remember. I already gave him the plush toy marmot on Sunday because I had hidden it in my laundry hamper and realized that I shouldn't let it end up smelling like dirty socks. ;p (It was in a plastic bag, but still.)
