Survived it
Jun. 19th, 2010 08:34 pmNot that there was ever any doubt. Power was out until 10 am today, with one brief interlude around sunset yesterday. In that instance, it came back on but was snuffed again a half hour later when the second front rolled through.
Lots of broken trees and branches all over the place. We saw cornfields today that were lying nearly flat, with all the stalks pointing away from the wind. All our buildings kept their roofs and siding, though. Some were not so lucky.
Dogs and cats went to the vet this morning for their annual vaccinations and stuff. Expensive that, but pretty much unavoidable. When we returned from the clinic, the power was back on and has since stayed on.
It's amazing how quiet things get when there's no electricity. I find I can hear things miles away outdoors, and things indoors that are completely obliterated by even the quiet sound of an aquarium pump or the soft hum of a fluorescent light. Then when the power comes back on, there's a tremendous cacophony of pointless noise as fans, computers, and other appliances all start back up.

There are so many sounds here I'm barely aware of until the power drops off.
