I'm dripping. Sitting still in a room with windows open. I sure hope the guy shows up tomorrow and fixes whatever is wrong with our system.

Another old disk drive arrived today, looking shiny and intact. It is currently undergoing a bad block check and test formatting. Only 36G, but for a machine like the Alpha that was a large drive. About a third done, so far no errors. This one is also a Seagate Cheetah, to match the other two in the same tower.

The one that came yesterday had to be transplanted from one Dell tray to a different style tray, but that was relatively easy. Then slipped it into the server and watched the warning lights go off. As far as I can tell, it has been merged back into the RAID-5 of which the failed drive was a part. All lights are green now. I'll have to make a real check, but in order to talk to the RAID controller, I have to shut down the OS and get to the BIOS level, which isn't convenient during open hours of the library. I also have to haul a keyboard and monitor into the mechanical room and hook them up. But I will, eventually. For the moment, no more flashing amber lights is good enough. This array is Seagate Cheetah as well, but 18G drives. Three drives for a total of 36G usable space, the rest is parity or whatever for the RAID. But since the server is primarily a proxy, it only uses about 2G of that space anyway.

Hot and sticky, supposed to be cooler tomorrow. I hope they are right. This is pretty hard to take, even though it's nothing to what they have out east. We've only been in the high 80s the last three days, with 80% humidity or more.

Off to send feedback to the eBay seller and then sit in front of a fan. Seeya.

I know that feeling all too well. If the fan's not blowing directly on me, it doesn't take long until I feel like I just stepped out of the shower.

I hope so, too, because if you get the cooler weather tomorrow, hopefully that'll mean that the prediction of cooler weather getting here on Friday night might be valid. Haven't seen the 100+ temperatures here, for whatever small relief that might give, but it's been humid and in the upper 90s. I wouldn't mind one bit if a freak snowstorm were to hit, just to break the heat for a while... :-P

It's definitely summer here, daily temperature varies between 27°C and 19°C (81°F and 66°F), and nights when I'm working are pretty steamy too. Well, days are too, since there's no AC here, and air is barely moving. And the thermometer on my desk says 31.5°C (89°F) now... *ponders on buying more fans... or migrating inside the freezer*
