Too tired already
Aug. 17th, 2010 09:20 pmAnd it's only Tuesday.
We were supposed to get another hay delivery tonight, but it was dripping rain a bit at sunset and he rescheduled probably for Friday. As long as it gets here dry, I won't complain.
Got a fair amount of cataloging done today, unusual for midweek. Also chased down a stack of OpenVMS manuals. I've started a project, we'll see if I can get it to work. At least in theory, it should be fairly straight-forward, though it may become mind numbingly tedious is a lot of the UNIX style source has to be modified.
Third party books on VMS are scarce. The few currently in print sell for prices over $100. Most are out of print, with the more recent ones commanding prices similar to the new ones. I had to go back nearly 20 years to find aome basic learning guides at a reasonable price. Fortunately the core of the API was already mature at that time. Of course the tutorials and examples are all in C, not my favorite language, but I'll have to make do. The primary manuals for the languages and system libraries are all available as online HTML documents or PDF files, but I like having a book I can sit and read, even if it isn't absolutely current.
The ultimate goal is to be able to port some Linux applications used for ham radio over onto VMS. I'm particularly interested in some of the math-intensive ones, such as antenna or propagation modeling. I found that the Alpha outperformed Intel processors at three times its clock speed while playing with those Fortran algorithms back in May. Since I have the Alpha, and can't justify buying a new multi-core system, I will make do.
We have an abundance of tomatoes and peppers growing in our impromptu container garden behind the library. I hadn't taken any yet this year, so I yielded to pressure and brought home a green pepper and three large tomatoes. When I got home, I made gazpacho, adding some celery, cucumber, jalapeno, red wine vinegar, olive oil, etc. Let it chill for an hour and we had it in lieu of salad with dinner. It wasn't bad at all. There's enough left for another round, too. Have to finish it tomorrow. Since it is just raw veggies partly liquified, it will ferment soon even in the fridge.
Now, time for bed I think.
