Story draft available here.
Not ready to post the next installment, but it will go up sometime tomorrow.
We had our "home visit" from the golden retriever rescue folks this morning, and it seemed to go well enough. They weren't nearly as particular as I'd expected, and seemed quite pleased with us as prospective adopters. We learned some interesting things too. I knew that fewer people are willing to take older dogs, and especially those with any known health problems. Since we are open to that possibility, it seems to give us a good advantage. Gary also told them we could take two, if there were to be a pair that shouldn't be separated. We won't hear officially that we've been approved for a couple more days, but I think we will pass easily.
And, just by coincidence, the group is holding a "Meet the seniors" event over in Crystal Lake tomorrow afternoon. Several older dogs will be there, and we plan to go. They also offer a "foster to adopt" plan, where you can foster a new arrival and if they seem to fit in, you get to adopt them directly and the dog doesn't have to be shifted from place to place several times before finding a permanent home. We said we could do that too. Our chances of having a new family member soon seem to have risen dramatically.
Adoption fees are reduced for older dogs, and they are waived if you adopt a second older dog later. I think the odds on getting a mellow older retriever are pretty good for us.
In other news, this messing with the clocks stuff is pure bullshit. It's not even my usual bedtime yet and I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open. Gary went to bed already. Tomorrow we'll just have to do everything an hour earlier by the clock, because horses and sheep don't understand or care about "daylight stupid time."

Date: 2010-11-08 02:04 am (UTC)Apparently people willing to take older dogs are hard to find, so I expect we'll be getting "suggestions" right away.

Date: 2010-11-08 02:07 am (UTC)I think we've succeeded with the dog rescue. No official word, but the two who came to interview us and look at our space were very enthusiastic. We saw them both today again at the "senior dog" gathering and they seem to consider it a done deal. We also talked to the placement specialist who matches people to dogs and she already knew our requirements for a dog who will tolerate cats and other dogs.

Date: 2010-11-07 06:57 pm (UTC)I absolutely hate the time change, too, although it's a bit easier for me to adjust when falling back in November. Since I usually stay up until the wee hours of the morning on Saturday night/Sunday morning, I typically set all my manually settable clocks back around 11 PM Saturday night and use the "extra" hour to go to bed early for a Saturday.
