Alarums without excursions

The NOAA weather alerts kept going off all afternoon. Dire warnings about thunder, hail, floods, and heavy rain. Needless to say, we got nothing. Dry as a bone here.

News here says that banker salaries and bonuses are rising to even more astronomical levels this year, while the economy is still in the septic tank. Oil futures are rising again as the speculators react to the floods on the Mississippi. When are we going to learn that these astronomical price increases are caused by speculators trying to use oil futures as a roulette wheel rather than by actual issues of supply and demand? Meanwhile the Republicans are predictably taking advantage of the inexcusably high prices to stump for more profits for the oil companies and less regulation. Never mind that BP just wrecked the Gulf of Mexico with their greed and reckless behaviors last year, the Republicans want us to drill everywhere, in every ocean and wildlife refuge we have. I think we should drill a few Republican heads to see if there are brains in there or if they are solid rock. I suspect the latter.

Actually, how about we drill for oil in Republican's brains? My perception is that many of them are about as progressive as dinosaurs, and oil usually takes millions of years to form from organic matter. Step one: Drill. Step two: Profit!

I fear that the flaw in our plan may be the difficulty in finding a drill that can even penetrate something as hard as a Republican head. Ordinary tools have been shown to fail.

Mervyn King said a few weeks ago that he does not understand why the public's anger over banking excess has not been louder and more violent. I am starting to think we get exactly what we deserve.

People get so used to being abused that they just accept it as an unchangeable law of nature. Just as there is little anger over the ridiculous behavior and statements of religious prelates and leaders, or politicians who pass ridiculously unenforceable laws, so it is accepted that bankers are actually pirates in fancy suits.

In the US, you have those who believe robbery is OK as long as someone profits from it. Though it may seem odd, even those who are being robbed often aspire to become the robber, and therefore will not criticize the behavior. It comes down to a "Lucky bastard. I wish I were he" attitude rather than "Stop that thief."

Humans are persistently and stubbornly stupid.
