Other than swatting mosquitoes and doing normal chores, we achieved one significant thing today. (Well, maybe two since I did a lot of overdue laundry, but that's mundane.)

We started a batch of mead. (Mead, for those who don't know, is wine made from honey. It can be dry, or sweet, or sparkling.) Gary has been saving a 60 pound bucket of honey from when we kept bees with this specifically in mind. He bought all the equipment we needed (actually, we've made wine before and had most of it) and then kept procrastinating. But today we started five gallons of mead on its way to the wine bottles. It will take four to six weeks to finish the two fermentation steps, and then it can be bottled. After that, we probably should wait a year before tasting it. Drink no wine before its time. But I'm sure we'll take small samples after each step... This used only 15 pounds of the honey, so there should be more to come.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued late this afternoon for our county, but turned out to only apply to the northeastern corner. The sun was shining here but we could hear the thunder. The distance to the actual storm cell was 20 to 25 miles. Nothing here but mosquitoes and unrelenting humidity.

Mmmm, mead. I'll be interested in hearing how that works out; the brother of a friend of mine made mead many years ago, or wanted to at least. I'm not sure he actually went ahead (I think he cared more about the end result than the process), but he'd gotten this large glass sphere for fermenting it, at least. I think he gave me the recipe, too, but I don't think I still have it, although I still recall the book it came from. ^^
