Running to stay in one place
Jul. 30th, 2011 10:56 pmLike the red queen, I guess.
Well, I did bake bread. We grilled some salmon for dinner. I replaced the battery in a UPS. (But still need to rearrange a maze of wires to put it back into service.)
No progress in Washington. No surprise there. Time for the people to speak and throw a lot of these useless bums out. They want to cut spending? Great. Let's cut off their salaries and perks, and especially the free health care for life. Let them eat stale cake like the rest of us are doing.

Date: 2011-07-31 04:16 pm (UTC)I think cutting the salaries and benefits of Congress would be worth doing as a punitive measure, but it wouldn't save us much out of our huge budget. Every bit counts, of course, but we'd save a ton by, say, cutting back on the number of undeclared wars. Congress needs to stop bending over and spreading 'em for the rich and corporate, too. A little more revenue would help a lot.

Date: 2011-07-31 04:44 pm (UTC)Except: My congresscritter is worthless. I've voted against him in every election since I've lived here, but he keeps getting sent back. His margin of victory gets smaller every two years, but he's still comfortably safe.
Illinois has worse, of course. Joe Walsh (tea party I think) is belly-aching about the deficit and wants more tax cuts, especially for corporations and the already wealthy, yet he is being sued by his ex-wife for $177K in unpaid support. Of course, like all the other GOP idiots, he opposes gay marriage and supports DOMA "to protect the sanctity of marriage" but I guess his own responsibilities in that line are irrelevant. I would never have voted for Walsh, but he's not my district, thank the gods.
We have one half-baked senator (Dick Durbin, who frequently disappoints me but at least leans in my direction) and a newly-elected jerk (Mark Kirk, who took Obama's former seat and is the usual social conservative, fiscal idiot, anti-entitlement GOP moron.) I did not vote for Kirk.
The problem is that we have more and more voters who simply won't take the time to understand issues, and make their X based on a few quick words. So buzzwords like "less government" or "no abortions" or "cut taxes" generate a knee-jerk vote from these guys because they haven't thought of the consequences.
Even the tea party supporters clearly haven't thought it through. Most of them don't want the schools, or the roads, or for that matter, their parents' Social Security and Medicare aid to vanish. But because they haven't made the connection, all they see is "taxes...I don't like taxes."
