Horsefeathers! Bring in the Clydes
Aug. 11th, 2011 08:42 pmSome teaser photos from the Boone County Fair today. I could watch the horses all day, but just didn't have time to stay there. Fortunately I was able to time our visit to allow me to catch some of the draft horses in the ring, including the "Ladies' cart, Clydesdale division." Sample photos under cut. I also have a two minute video but I'll upload that from work due to bandwidth issues. (It's 112 MB.)

This one was my favorite in the class of seven entries. The judges never agree with me, though, and she got seventh place.

Another one I liked, but she was placed somewhere down around fourth if I remember correctly.

Here is the blue ribbon winner. She was nice and showy, I'll admit, but I preferred the conformation of some of the others. Of course, performance classes are judged based on the performance of the horse and rider, and sometimes the appearance of the harness and rig, and at least supposedly not on the perfection of the animal itself.

And what photoset of Clydesdales would be complete without a closeup of the feathers? Several of the large horses, notably the Friesian and Shire, also have heavy feathering, but in my opinion, the Clydesdales are the best. So here are Jethro Tull's famous "Ironclad feather feet, pounding the dust..."
All in all, I took 74 photos of the Clydesdales, Percherons, and a few ponies, plus two videos before running out of space on my memory card. Oops, I hadn't cleared it off for a while.
EDIT: The video is now available on YouTube.
