Whee!

Nice birthday present from casey382 who pointed me to an Ebay listing for a new Atlas GP-7 locomotive (unpainted) at a good price. Nabbed it immediately. I found a photo yesterday that was taken in 1956, right on target for the period I want, showing a DT&I GP-7. The scheme is simple and should be quite workable.

I acquired two cabooses of the appropriate design this morning for $10 total including shipping. They will need repainting, but the 1940s scheme is plain red with simple logo and numbers. The 1950s is a two or three color scheme but still pretty simple. I'll probably do one in each. I can pick up some more cars as I go along. DT&I had a slogan "We have the connections" and they certainly did, so a mix of cars from connecting lines is entirely appropriate. Those would include C&O, Wabash, Pennsylvania, and several others in the mid-1950s.

Need to get some track, of course, but that's easy enough. Time to actually think about a layout for it. I want to set up to run two trains at once, one with steam and one Diesel. I'll have spent a little more up front than I intended, but not a fortune by any means. By using materials we have at hand, The total may come in under $150 to get this going and hey, it's my birthdday AND Christmas this month, so...

Congrats on the find! We haven't run model trains here in many years due to space constraints, and the kids having outgrown them.

Thanks. I'd been watching, but Casey is better at it than I am, it seems. He has probably found a steam loco for me as well, but I have more detective work to do on that. In the end I want a layout that runs two trains at once, one a late steam engine and the other a fairly early Diesel.

We're considering space options. Modular building may be the best solution, though it limits the complexity of the layout somewhat.

You're close, but I'm going farther than that. I plan to put myself in the cab, at the throttle. And I will populate the scenery with furries. Anyone who doesn't look closely may not catch on, since N scale is so small, but you'll be able to see it without a magnifying glass if you actually look instead of focusing on the moving trains.

We saw an N scale scene at a show a couple of years ago that had a dragon raiding a town on the edge of the forest. Most passers by didn't seem to even notice it.

Well, shucks.
No problem. Finding the unfindable in the model RR world is what I do.
I still have a couple searches that are years old, but haven't given up.
You know, the thrill of the hunt and all that.
