I need to make an icon from the flat pony. I think I've said that before, too.

Wasn't really that excessive a day, but we've been up late the last two nights, which probably contributes. Today was the usual chores, make breakfast, put supper into the crockpot because we'd be gone all afternoon, and head off to that musical session. The music was fun, nothing was competitive or aggressive about it, and we got home just at dark.

There's more to do this evening, of course, but I could go to bed right now. Trouble is, I'd probably wake up at two or three in the morning and not be able to get back to sleep.

We've had freezing fog on and off all day. For those who don't get that where they live, freezing fog is a condition where the air temperature is below freezing and the air is supersaturated with water vapor. Normally this would produce fog at any temperature, but below freezing the condensate forms elaborate crystalline structures on the surface of twigs, leaves, and other small diameter objects.

At sunrise, all the trees and shrubs were covered with hoarfrost, some of it an inch long. They look like they are covered with sparkly white fur. It's so fragile that if you breath on it the crystals appear to dissolve back into the air. It kept melting and reforming during the day as the temperature fluctuated around freezing. I expect a good coating again overnight.

The weather service reported that the air temperature at 1000 feet was around 50F, while we were experiencing 25F at ground level. A layer of dense clouds lay between the two thermal zones, but no rain fell. It's like seeing salt or sugar crystals forming in a cooling saturated solution. Weird looking and interesting to see.

Been a long time since I experienced freezing fog. :)

We have fog here tonight too, though probably not to the same extent you have (we don't have a freezing fog advisory yet). Hope to see some hoarfrost tomorrow morning, even if it won't be much.

Hoarfrost was one of the things that would have me running for my rolls of Plus-X Pan...it's made for B&W photos. :)

I love it when the sun comes up and begins melting that frost: the trees are radiant and the air is filled with the sound of falling water drops.

We're at 33 deg F with blowing rain, and threatening sleet, at the moment. Of course the dogs just have keep going out in the muddy yard!

The fog continues here, with temperatures hovering below freezing. Trees and shrubs are covered with white furriness and the sun is not quite breaking through the cloud cover. Pretty to look at through a window, but cold and clammy to go outside.

Unfortunately, I'm at work. We are open today, but close on Presidents' Day.

Do they still make black and white film for non-professional cameras? I bet you'd have to do your own processing. I'm not even sure where to buy 35mm color film any more. I have taken color photos from the digital camera and converted them to B&W in the computer to get the desired effect at times, though.

You'd look funny covered with hoarfrost on your black fur. ;p

Fog still here past when they said it would clear, and trees are covered with white stuff.

We're closed, but I had to go in anyway. Roads had cleared nicely. Five totes of returns by ten this morning. I was ghosting a dead computer while cleaning. Put a scavenged cd drive in, too.

I almost wish Hallmark would commercialize MLK, Jr. Day so that I'd know whether to wish a 'happy' day or whatever greeting. Patrons kept shaking the door and the phones rang steadily all morning.

The MLK holiday is still so controversial that I doubt you'll see any commercialization in our lifetimes. Though the federal government observes it with rather excessive diligence, in many states it is utterly ignored. Here in Illinois, where people are still complaining that Lincoln's Birthday got subsumed into Washington's to make the nondescript Presidents' Day, MLK is observed mostly in the large cities with significant black populations and ignored in rural areas. (Except for complaints that the post office and social security office are closed, and wondering why...)

*inspeads one of the shrubs and pokes it, the crystals shake off and dissappear, startled cabcat runs back into the house and watches the crystals appear again. Then he goes to watch the crockpot for the next few hours*

You really need to respond faster if you want to get fed. That stuff's been gone for days. ;p
