Puffballs. Calvatia gigantea to be precise. Edible if you get them before the slugs and insects tunnel into them.

The ones I'm used to seeing are rather smaller...

I'm pretty sure the average size even here is in the 5 to 10 cm range. The last one we saw that was this large happened three years ago. I'm not quoting Guinness or anything, but I think the record size is quite a bit larger than this one. Like a meter or so diameter? The amazing thing is how fast they grow. Usually not there one day, and the next morning, surprise!
