Rather like the theory on which Netflix bases its movie recommendations: You like X and Y and your friends A and B also like X and Y. A and B like Z as well, though you haven't listed it as an interest. Perhaps you forgot to include Z, or perhaps you would really like it if you tried it. Not a perfect algorithm, but a sensible one once you have enough data.

OK, sure, music, computers, art. Those are general selections where I have listed more specific aspects of the same things in my interests. But I dislike anime. And the inflation elements: well yes, but so many? Either I have a very lopsided and specialist group of friends, or I have a fetish of which I was previously unaware. :) Fascinating.
