In just 24 hours and 45 minutes, or so, I will no longer be 71 years old. My birth certificate says I was born at 10:54 pm EST on December 14, 1949 in Detroit. The clocks here are CST, so as of 9:54 pm tomorrow, I'll be 72. (And still getting asked for my birthdate when I buy wine at Walmart, for what that's worth. Not much, I suspect.)

I don't make a big deal out of birthdays any more. Well, I never did, actually. Even the big 21, which was a huge deal on my college campus when I was an undergraduate, became a nothing. That's because the state changed the legal drinking age to 18 when I was 20. So all the perks that my peers got at 21 (like 21 free silver dollar pancakes at IHOP for instance) I missed out on. No big deal, actually.

Age 65 might have been big because I could retire and claim my pension benefits then, but Congress messed that one up by changing the "full retirement" age to 66 at right about that time. I retired at 65-1/2 anyway. The difference in social security benefits was very small. I couldn't retire at 65 for a more important reason. Illinois did not officially allow my partner and I to be legally married until we were both 64. We took advantage of that immediately, having been together for 32 years already. However, my private pension funds required that we be legally married for a full year before they would recognize our marriage and that was important for inheritance reasons should I die first. So I waited until that was settled. Red tape is so much fun.

Anyway, I remain in reasonably good health and have no intention of kicking the proverbial bucket any time soon. As for buying the farm, we already did that way back in 1998. So here we are.

BTW, husband is baking a birthday cake right now and we expect to share it with friends tomorrow. It's one of his famous recipes, a double chocolate bundt cake with Guinness in both the cake itself AND the chocolate glaze. I'm not a real serious chocolate fan, but this one is definitely good.

Gary's, not mine. We are six months apart, diametrically opposed both on the calendar and astrologically. But that isn't necessarily bad. It means that to a significant degree, our skills and interests are complementary, and as a result we make a good team for some projects.

Took him out today and made him pick out a new desk chair for his office, and bought it for him as a birthday/father's day gift. His old one was a faded blue fabric one left from his workplace, and he has had it as long as I've known him (30 years.) It squeaks and creaks and the fabric is wearing thin. The padding on the seat and back is completely flat. It was definitely time for a new one but I had some convincing to do before he agreed to it.

Then we made an experiment. Pulled pork barbecue (Yes I know, but it was his birthday this weekend) and it turned out surprisingly good. Also I made bumbleberry pie: blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and apples.

Soooo...

Saturday is Gary's birthday. He's very difficult to buy gifts for. I've got him a basic e-reader (Kobo) and I think he'll like it but it will take him a while to warm to it. (He had the same reaction to MP3 audiobooks but now he's addicted to them.) I charged the battery and loaded a dozen free books that I think he will like, on top of the 100 or so that already come pre-loaded. Thanks to the Baen free library (www.baen.com/library) I could easily get free copies of several complete books. I'll show him how to check out and download library books, of course.

I've also got a locomotive for him. N scale, of course, but he wanted a Diesel switching engine and we still haven't found a good one. I got a Kato NW2 in B&O/Chessie System colors after hunting for months. Those things are pricey. (Yes, it cost more than the Kobo reader.) I'm still looking for an unpainted shell for the NW2 so I can do a custom paint job for him in any line, real or imagined, that he chooses.

And Sunday is Father's day, which means I should also get him a gift from the sheep, ducks, horses, and his dog...

I'm sore. As if I'd been gardening all day. What I actually did was uninstall a five seat multi-user Linux workstation and replace it with a newer six-seat version this morning. This entails lots of crawling around on the floor and pushing cables through small openings. Hurray, it's working. I think.

Oh, and we cleaned the fans for the horses' stalls. Or I should say Gary did while I handed him tools and such. It's getting really warm and humid, so this is a good thing.

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes, I really do appreciate being remembered so thoughtfully. (Especially since I tend to be very forgetful about such things myself.)

Gary and I had plans to go out for dinner to a place we like but they are on winter hours and not open on Monday, so that gets shelved for the weekend. Instead he made dinner, with several things I really like including broccoli with hollandaise and salmon patties. There's cake yet to come.

He also got me a really neat present. I've wanted one of these for ages, so long that I'd given up looking for it. They are quite expensive but he assures me he found a bargain. It's an artist's horse "manikin" (or should that be "ponikin"?) Made of polished wood with all the right adjustable joints, a flexible neck and graceful tail, it can be posed appropriately for practice drawing. I just think it's a really cool piece of art in itself. I also received a tiny plush horsie and a book on drawing horses with some art supplies and a sketchpad.

More than made up for the gray and drippy day today, and may even distract me from the predicted cold tomorrow and tomorrow night.

Then we watched Wallace & Gromit in "A Case of Loaf or Death" which we hadn't yet seen.
