Got into the 80s today. When I passed through downtown at lunchtime, the Chamber of Commerce sign seemed to have a couple of LEDs out, so it was indicating the temperature as 32F rather than 82F. Unless someone thought that was a good joke...

You would think that weather like that would keep people out of the library, but the computer users were as insistent as ever. Thank goodness the machines now shut down automatically at 15 minutes before closing. It used to be really difficult to get people out the doors so we could lock up.

Fox is back. I'm quite sure. Haven't seen her yet, but I've smelled her several times and she's been digging in various places.

This would be the weekend to get lots more stuff into the garden. Hopefully the promised thunderstorms Saturday through Tuesday morning won't materialize. Lots of stuff to do indoors as well, but none of it is as time critical as planting. At least tonight we'll get to sleep with windows open for the first time this year. I wonder whether it will be to traffic noise or to frogs. I definitely prefer the frogs and maybe the fox yerfing.

Is the auto shutdown a hard power cut, or one of those softish "Windows is going to reboot now, kthxbye" shutdown notifications?

This is Linux with a custom front end. There's a flashing red box that appears in the lower right corner of the screen at ten minutes to closing, with a countdown timer inside. I find it distinctly noticeable, but of course some people complain that they had no warning ... in spite of signs all over saying that computers will shut down at 15 minutes to closing time.

People are so used to popups already... maybe little electric shocks, every five minutes before shutdown? ;-)

I'm in favor of just abruptly turning the power and lights off ten minutes to closing.

I have a better idea on how to empty the library at closing time. If you have a PA system, play "Andy Val Gourmet - Chacarron, Macarron". Loud. :)

I guarantee they will pack their stuff up quickly. :D

Fortunately, we have no PA system. The place isn't big enough to need one.

Pity. :]

Maybe just see if gradually dimming the lights would work. :P

Well, the library is airconditioned, right?

Theoretically, yes. In practice, it's fairly inconsistent and unreliable. Poorly designed zone system with failure points all over, controlled by (believe it or not) a PC running Windows ME. The latter says it all.

Got into the 80s today

I will never understand the North American interpretation of temperature.

I read this and thought for a second that you and Gary had gone for a night out in Reflex. :D

*snicker*
Even Canada uses Celsius now. So it's not really North American but just USian stubbornness.

Yesterday's high temperature of 83F here is 28.3C there.

Thats about as hot as I like it to get if the humidity is higher than 50%, and in the UK it normally is.

Ungh. Waaay too hot for the zebra. o.O

I prefer running cool, around 22-24C.

Oh, and the only night out I could imagine that would be worse than the 80s would be the 70s. Gah.

Actually, my tolerance for loud noisy music has never been good, so even when one could visit the 80s without a TARDIS I avoided those environments.

I loved nights out with loud(ish) music in my student days. These days I have less tollerance for it. For me, the 80s (young as I was when I was living through them) were a decade of amazing music. Most of the rest of it was crap though. Thatcherism and crippled public service. IRA bombs and Michael Winner movies. *shudders*

I'll take the music and leave the rest, thanks.

Music with a reasonable sound volume please. :)
I have always liked peace and quiet.
And now I have Scenesat (www.scenesat.com) ^__^

That's music? Sound like ambient noise from a shopping mall to me. ;p

Well, the quality varies, as it is all made by demoscene artists.
I enjoy it a lot. The music is also free. Of course, Scenesat has got a couple of commercial exclusives like "She - Coloris", but generally it is all freeeeee! :)
