Celebrated the newly cleaned oven by baking another rhubarb pie. This one has strawberries in it as well, since they had some decent ones on sale at the market Saturday. Mmmm. I'm amazed how many people have been telling me they never tasted rhubarb. To me it was part of home cooking, something we had every spring, but I guess in an age of take out food and frozen microwave convenience all but the most popular and common choices just tend to disappear. That's sad.

One of my grandmothers was of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. Pies are a central feature of that culture's food, and she was a fine baker. I learned pie-making from her and from my mother, to the point where most of my friends think it's a genetic skill.

Now, revisiting the subject of anime, we watched Pom Poko over the weekend. I know, everyone else was at the theatre to see Over the Hedge and I have no intention of missing that. But I wanted to look at something not directly influenced by Miyazaki in case my dislike for anime turned out to be actually a dislike for Miyazaki. It isn't. Pom Poko is different, but still has major problems for me. Fuller commentary is available on the Clydesdale Librarian pages.

*nods* Well, I understand your concern, but you need to be sure you're not just acting out of fear of the unknown- you'll forgive me, but a lot of people stray into that realm as they get *ehem* older and less in touch with messy cultural influences.... but that aside, I think I would be inclined to generalize that most anime fans are merely screwed up people who've already made up their minds about how they'll behave and are just looking for an outlet. Anime manages to pass for such an outlet for all the characteristics of the genre you've mentioned... not the other way around(you follow?).

Yes, I see what you mean. It's a "chicken or the egg" issue all right, just like videogames and violent films and television.

I don't really think that the existence of those things causes trouble. I'm bugged by the fact that their proliferation fails to address the trouble, though, and doesn't even offer a real outlet for it.

*chuckles* Yeah, sometimes I think anime is Japanese for "fuck with foreigner's heads" :P Oh well, at least there are people like me who are happy to sit down with people like you and try to mediate :) Kudos to you for even trying to understand, BTW most people older than 25 wouldn't even bother. As Bruce Lee once said, "Your openmindedness is cool, but it doesn't change anything" ;)

Well, I gave anime more of a chance than most kids today give to reading, unfortunately. (I don't count manga as reading, they are just anime on paper.)

Aww- don't let it get you down, hoss. There will always be someone like me out there you haven't yet met. We read too... lots :) I myself am in the middle of the Snow Falling On Cedars (I must admit I saw the movie first, though *blushes*). On Chapter 5 myself... I need to read more of your chapters *gives embarrassed expression like in the pic*

Now that I think of it, how did you get entangled back here in stuff I wrote over 18 months ago?

Just 'cause things are old, doesn't mean I don't get interested in 'em ;) *hugs you and gives you a peck on the cheek*
