Afternoon meeting in Loves Park. Getting there is a pain from here. You either go 20 miles out of the way to use reasonably straight, well paved roads, or else you cross the middle of Boone County on country roads just barely wide enough for two cars to pass and none of which go all the way through to anywhere. Instead it's one mile west, half a mile north, two miles west, a quarter mile south, a mile west, two miles north, half a mile west... You get the picture. I keep trying to find an easy to remember, reasonably direct route. I may have gotten as close as possible today, and was even early for the meeting. Then had to go to work, which is a fairly direct route from there, but the total extra miles driven today was about 42.

Work was a zoo as well, with multiple meetings going on, a jammed parking lot, and a final door count of 931. Still trying to calm down enough to go to bed...

I hate meetings that last more than 30 minutes. They waste my time and cause call volumes to get out of control.

Well, the meeting I had to travel for is actually not bad most of the time. Ever since we busted out of the Big Mucked Up Consortium, it has been a reasonably pleasant social occasion.

The others when I got back to work were nothing I had to attend. They were just using up space in the library.

Melted horse is extremely messy and sometimes smelly. Not recommended. ;p

That's tedious. I have various routes for getting to work under various circumstances, and my least-effort route is about 32 miles. The shortest is nearer 26 miles, but involves some interesting narrow roads over the Downs. My usual jam-avoiding routes are mostly between 34 and 37 miles, and my least-effort "visit the bank on the way" route is 42 miles. My usual problem with commuting is not so much the distance involved as the time spent in crawling or stationary traffic, though.

My normal travel distance is 15 miles and takes 25 minutes. For the sort of thing I did yesterday, I get paid a per mile allowance for the driving, which at least covers the cost of the fuel if not the aching hindquarters.

When we first moved out here to the countryside (ten years ago, where did the time go?) I was commuting to a job in Chicago on weekdays. That was over 70 miles each way, involving a nine mile drive to the train station in Woodstock, a 55 mile trip by train (1 hour, 20 minutes) and a two mile walk from the station to the college. Making the trip ten times a week takes a definite chunk out of your time. XD

Yeow! The 45 minutes or so my commute usually takes is just about bearable, though a whole lot less pleasant than the 20-minute cycle ride I used to have. If it takes an hour or more I feel hard done by, unless the radio provided something particularly interesting to listen to.

Well, of course, riding the train did often provide an opportunity for reading or listening to an audiobook or music, though I really did enjoy watching the scenery through the windows, even when the entire 50 miles became fairly familiar. The changing foliage, field plantings, and animals once the tracks were outside the city made it always interesting.

I'd much prefer to travel by train, but to do that I'd have to either live or work somewhere else. There is some scenery to admire along parts of my usual route (if the driving isn't taking all my attention). The trees on the Downs are already showing signs of autumn, and within a month I'll normally be driving home after sunset.

That's tedious.

As well as being the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.

And by coincidence, is also the number of randomly collected golf balls a non-golfer picks up in their lifetime. Beyond that number, it would be highly advisable to get a golf ball display cabinet.

Or just take up golf yourself and chuck the balls back at the other golfers. I found one buried in my vegetable garden this spring. No idea where it came from, though, separated from the road and any likely golfing neighbors by dense woods and distance as it is. I suppose some errant squirrel took it for a nut and buried it.
